|   | | June 2 - Despite the tainted legacy of George W. Bush, millions of people around the world (except obviously those in Arab states) still gaze star struck at the United States as a country built on freedom and democracy, where 'bigger is better'. Even American sports are revered around the world, including Major League Baseball (MLB).
On Monday this week, Major League Baseball International announced that it renewed lucrative broadcast agreements - to televise its games live - with Canada, Venezuela and Japan, and added Australia to the mix. Despite the land down under being a famous rugby and cricketing nation, baseball is catching on fast.
Under the terms of the new Australian agreement, one of the country's most popular TV channels, Network Ten, will carry the rights to broadcast no less than three live regular-season games each week, as well as the MLB postseason via its digital sports network, ONE, and the ever-popular 'This Week In Baseball'.
Said MLB international business operations senior vice president, Paul Archey. 'By entering into these agreements to broadcast games internationally, Major League Baseball and its partners continue to make MLB content available globally and demonstrate our commitment to promote and grow the game of baseball.'
As part of Canada's new broadcasting contract, American baseball fans in the country - renowned for ice hockey and maple syrup - will be able to enjoy live MLB games for another five years on leading Canadian broadcaster, Rogers Sportsnet. The broadcaster is expected to televise at least 250 MLB games a year.
But the foreign country above all that covets all things American, is Japan, which is why Japanese broadcaster Dentsu signed a contract with Major League Baseball International that will be valid until 2015. In fact, the deal has made Dentsu the longest-running MLB media partner in the broadcast history of the game.
A similar agreement was reached with the Venezuela's Meridiano Television, that will see up to 8 live MLB games being broadcast each week, and one with Venezuela's DirecTV Latin America, which will broadcast up to 8 MLB games a week on its basic tier and up to 16 games week on its premium tier.
