Philadelphia Phillies On Fire As Defending Champs

--

June 4 - The Philadelphia Phillies' 5-1 victory over the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park last night confirmed what most of the visiting team's fans already knew - they are on a mission to win the World Series for the second year running, highlighted by the fact that Wednesday's win was the Phillies' sixth consecutive.

As for the Padres, despite chalking up 10 consecutive wins at their home ground and obviously eager to make it eleven against the Phillies - a team that beat them in their last two games - they could not bear up to the skills of the visitors. This means that they are now 0 for 3 against the Phillies and 10 for 1 at home.

There were many notable players in last night's game, including the Phillies' Ryan Howard who impressed who smashed a two-run homer off Padres' pitcher Chris Young. The homer - which sailed over Tony Gwynn Jr's outstretched arms into the bleachers - was Howard's second of the series and sixth for the Phillies.

Having completed his 50-game suspension for testing positive for steroids, Phillies' reliever J.C. Romero returned to game Wednesday night, and pitched for one and a third innings. The south paw pitcher held his own, only letting through one unearned run on two hits, a single walk and a Chris Conte-passed ball.

The pitcher, who celebrated two wins last year against the Tampa Bay Rays to win the World Series for the Phillies, ended his time on the mound by retiring the Padres' Brian Giles. Walking off the field, the once disgraced pitcher punched the air with a big grin on his face, obviously happy to be back in the game.

He was replaced by Ryan Madson. But when all was said and done, the Philadelphia Phillies played a better, smarter game to notch up a well-deserved victory over Padres to snatch the three-game series in convincing style. In these three games, the Phillies scored 20 runs from 33 hits, including 15 for extra bases.

This triumph from the Philadelphia Phillies has put them in joint second in the Major League Baseball National League standings alongside the Milwaukee Brewers with 31 wins apiece, but behind the leaders, the Los Angeles Dodgers who have won an impressive 37 in this MLB campaign.
