|   | | May 26 - So far in this year's Major League Baseball season, things have really starting to heat up as teams from the American League take on teams from the National League and the strongest teams begin to emerge, drawing ever closer to the playoffs. Teams like the Pittsburgh Pirates who dazzled in Chicago.
Last night at Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, it was the Pittsburgh Pirates who delivered a dazzling display of baseball prowess. When the Pirates walked onto the field under an expected barrage of unfriendly stares and jeers from the predominantly partisan crowd, they held their heads high and went to work.
The cool Chicago evening saw the Pirates kick it into high gear when talented batter Freddy Sanchez hit what should have been a single, then turned it into a double. Next, when Adam LaRoche stepped up to the plate, he popped one out, safely bringing Sanchez home. The scene was now set for an epic showdown.
Score 1-0 to the Pirates. However, in the second inning, the Chicago Cubs got to exercise their revenge to make it 1-1. After what should have been a third strike by Cubs' batter Alfonso Soriano was called as a walk, he proceeded to first base. Then thanks to a great effort by Ryan Theriot, Sorian made it home.
In the third inning, Chicago pitcher Ryan Dempster failed to pitch on target, giving away his 18th walk of the season, allowing Pittsburgh's Nyjer Morgan to proceed to first base unhindered. Freddy Sanchez secured a single, moving him to first and Morgan to second. Then Nate McLouth made it to first, loading the bases.
A by now rattled Dempster threw another wide ball, allowing Adam LaRoche to walk, resulting in home run. The beleaguered pitcher than managed to walk Brandon Moss to score yet another home run. The inning was ended when Andy LaRoche grounded into a double play, but the inning still yielded a 3-1 lead.
What followed was basically more of the same, although most who watched the game will agree that pitches that looked like strikes were called as balls, and balls called were actually strikes. But, when all was said and done, the Pittsburgh Pirates were too strong for the Cubs, clinching the first of the three game series.
The Chicago Cubs losing streak is now sitting at eight games.
