|   | | May 29 - The harsh reality of most multi-billion dollar sports these days is that behind the glitz and glamour, fame and fortune, and droves of adoring fans, there lurks a dark secret involving the sale and use of illegal performance enhancing drugs (steroids), which give the users thereof an unfair advantage.
As such, sports authorities all over the world - particularly in the United States where sportsmen face enormous pressures by their teams, peers and fans to always perform at their best - are seeking to root out the purveyors of said illicit drugs and steroids, as well as punish those who have been using them.
This week the noose around illegal steroids tightened in the U.S., after couple from Lakeland, Florida were arrested on charges of distributing steroids. What's more, they dropped a bombshell when they admitted to selling their wares to players from the Washington Nationals and Washington Capitals.
According to Sheriff Grady Judd of Polk County Sheriff's Office, when questioned about the sizeable amount of illegal steroids and drug paraphernalia found at the couple's home - including steroid pills, vials of steroids, valium and syringes - Richard Thomas implicated players from the NHL and MLB teams.
While it is still too early to determine whether the accused are lying or being truthful about their claim, there is no doubt that the saying 'where there is smoke there is fire' has investigators and fans of the two teams worried that the allegations may be true, once again dragging professional sports through the mud.
However, in a statement to the media, Judd made it clear that as yet his detectives had not uncovered any hard evidence linking the Thomas' to any players from either of the teams. In response to the allegations, MLB spokesperson Pat Courtney stated 'Our Department of Investigations is looking into it.'
Likewise, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly issued a statement saying 'We will conduct a prompt investigation.' As far as responses from the Washington Nationals or Washington Capitals go, neither team has issued a statement as yet. Which obviously begs the question: What are they hiding?
