Typical Bet Types
North American Sports
Side
This bet applies to Football, Basketball, Baseball and Ice Hockey.
A Side bet predicts who will win the game. This type of bet is usually
handicapped. The handicap is known as a Spread. The underdog will be given
certain number of points as a head start, and the favorite will be
"handicapped" with the same number of points. If the favorite has a handicap of
-3.5, then it has to beat the underdog by four or more points for a winning bet. If the final score, taking into account the
spread, is a draw (known
as a Push), the bet is considered void, and you are refunded.
Baseball Side bets have no spreads. They are linked to the selection of one of
the starting pitchers.
Totals
A totals bet predicts the combined score of both teams and will go either
over or under the total provided by the bookmaker. If the total final
score is equal to the total specified, the bet is a Push, and your stake is
refunded
Money line Bets
This simply is a bet to predict the winner of a game with no spread.
This type of bet is less popular, because the price for the Side is usually
better value. All ties are a "push" and your stake is refunded.
Run line
This bet applies only to Baseball. You predict the team that will score the most
runs. The underdog always given +1.5 points advantage. All ties are refunded.
Future
Simply put, a future bet predicts the final winner in a tournament or
championship.
Parlays
This bet applies to Football, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Baseball and College
Sports. A parlay bet combines the winners accross different games and different
sports on one betting slip.
Some sportsbooks treat parlays differently in terms of the number of selections
in a parlay allowed, but the norm is between 2 and 10. In the case of a push,
the parlay odds change to the remaining selections.
